ABP is the only association of professional basketball players in Spain. It was founded in the spring of 1986, and the association has defended the players of the ACB league for over 20 years, by negotiation collective agreements within the sector, and representing players in all the institutions where decisions which may affect their interests, personal development and their professional careers are being made. ABPs mission is to assure that the players rights are being protected at all times and maximize their opportunities both on and outside the court. The Professional Basketball players Association ( ABP) was founded in July of 1986. It was the result of an initiative of a large number of players who believed it to be necessary to respond to the absolute power that the ACB was executing at the time. A wrongdoing called ” the gentlemen's agreement” had been established, violating the legal aspect and allowing the clubs to make lists of intransferable players, which acted as the motive behind these players reaction. As a counteract they founded a syndicate to defend their interests. From the mere beginning, ABPs efforts lead to a collective agreement which proposed a dignified contraction process for the players and an improvement of the social rights which would cover a larger number of possible needs. After two years of negotiation and some tension, the first Collective Agreement in professional basketball was signed in March of 1990. The second, still in forbearance, was signed in July of 1993, and is currently in the phase of renegotiation. This agreement regulates, among other things, the sectors minimum wage policy, vacations and breaks, the disciplinary regime, the exploitation of the rights of the image as stated by the Social Fund, Found for salary guaranteed, the judicial lines of contracts.etc. ABP does not only concern itself with the present, but also the preparation and adaptation to a life after finishing their professional careers, and how to obtain an income from different sources. Due to this, a variety of agreements have been made with different universities and centers who give classes of accounting, marketing, etc, to facilitate an education which may be adapted to the players different agendas. Along the same line, the working agreement with Adecco to develop the Relevo Program, has been established to facilitate the integration of those players in the working environment, teaching in techniques of job finding, and helping them with what is for them a new and difficult experience. Furthermore, since 1995 ABP has arranged during summer time, educational classes free of charge for the players. These are aimed at obtaining knowledge relative to the business and financial world, containing, among others, the basic ideas when starting up a business, how franchises work, and the financial market. In summer 2003 ABP also started with technical training sessions to improve the players skills during the off- season. With the presence of different prestigious coaches, the players are able to assist two weekly training sessions, during which they learn different tools necessary to develop their skills and talents. In addition to what has been mentioned above, the establishment of the Mutualidad Deportistas Profesionales arrange pension plans with unique characteristics for professional athletes that allows them to plan a strategic saving plan that combine reduction in the percentage of the taxes with some bank interest. The MDP saw the light in the year 2000, and its funding members are AFE, AJBM, AJFS, ACP and ABP. Currently ABP also holds the Vice- Presidency of the Mutualidad de Deportistas Profesionales. ABP is also representing the best interest of its players in the Executive Committee and the Anti- Doping Committee of the Spanish Basketball Federation, the Arbitrary Committee of the Spanish Olympic Committee, and Anti - Violence Committee, and Mixed Committee which is for the transformation of clubs to societies. And also at the broadcasting of sports events, all of which are dependent of the Superior Council of Sports.

SETCa/BBTK is made up of employees, technicians and managerial staff, whether they are in work or not, who want to see a fairer society based on greater solidarity. This aim implies the development of independent trade unionism capable of negotiating whenever possible and fighting whenever needed. Trade union associations and employer representatives negotiate collective agreements at the interprofessional level (for all of the companies and institutions within the private sector), at a sector-specific level (for example for the banks, for the major stores etc.) and within individual companies. SETCa/BBTK sets particular store by being able to conduct these negotiations, relating to salaries and working conditions, freely. The agreements concluded at the interprofessional or sector-specific levels apply to all of the companies and institutions concerned, including those where there is no or very little trade union representation. This "social regulation" ensures that the minimum rights of those workers who are in the weakest position are guaranteed by encouraging solidarity amongst all. Flexibility of working hours, for example, is one issue for which the importance of this kind of regulation couldn't be clearer. Indeed, the point is that such flexibility must not lead to a deterioration in the quality of life of the person concerned. In order to avoid the development of unregulated flexibility, it has to be the subject of collective negotiations, compensation must be provided and it must be monitored. This is just one example among many that show the importance of ensuring you are defended by a strong trade union association.

GMB is a strong, modern, dynamic trade union focused on one thing - protecting our members in the workplace. This website reflects GMB's aims and ideals, and shows what we do every day for our members. GMB bannerGMB is a general union - which means that anyone can join us. We have over 600,000 members working in every part of the economy. One in every 32 people at work in the UK is a member of GMB and GMB is organised in 34 of the UK's biggest 50 companies. GMB has members in every part of the UK economy doing every type of job imaginable. Our members are men and women, young and old, working full and part time, and are made up of a wide and diverse cross section of our society. Every day of the year GMB offers protection at work and solves problems for GMB members. We provide back up, representation and advice on every issue related to your life at work. This system of support can be provided in a number of ways, often through one of our 25,000 union representatives: individuals who give their time voluntarily to help their workmates. Backing up the reps are full time GMB officials - their job is to listen to you, advise you and represent you at work. We also employ a team of experts on a range of issues including legal specialists, health and safety experts, pension specialists, human resource management staff and experts on terms and conditions. In fact, if you need advice and support about anything to do with work the GMB can help you. Our fundamental approach is that together we can achieve more than we can do on our own. Whether you're looking for better pay, improved childcare, realistic work-life balance, a change to long working hours, the elimination of poor health and safety or simply a desire for respect from your employer; together our voices are much more powerful than one voice alone. GMB has been in existence for over 12 decades and has grown to be one of Britain's most powerful and forward looking forces for change. It is made up of a number of unions who have merged over the last 120 years to become GMB - Britain's General Union. Through peace and war, with and without help from Government, GMB has been winning for our members and protecting people at work. GMB is here for you - to protect you, to represent you and to make a better life for you.

The National Federation of Christian Trade Unions in the Netherlands is a trade union federation with a membership of over 340,000. The organisation is completely independent of governmental or political groups, and is open for everybody to join. The CNV can be proud of broad grassroots support, spread throughout the Netherlands. Eleven trade unions are affiliated to the CNV working in the various sectors (such as manufacturing industry, transport, police, service industries, the public sector, education, health care). The CNV unions guard and advocate employees' rights in matters related to collective labour agreements, social security, and pensions. There are overall themes that concern all affiliated CNV trade unions and their members. The CNV trade union federation takes these interests to heart and actively promotes better work opportunities, working conditions, worker participation, social security, environment, education and training facilities. The CNV works for the renewal and betterment of society, for all people to share in prosperity and well-being, to live in freedom on the basis of equality. This is not restricted to Dutch national borders. The CNV also operates internationally. Human rights, the right to organise trade unions, sustainable development, international co-operation, globalisation, and social development are familiar constituent themes in CNV policy. This scope makes the CNV a broad movement which, next to the protection of collective and individual interests, strives for the renewal of society and workers' emancipation. CNV is not merely concerned with members' short term interests. Themes such as quality of life and work are elementary to the CNV approach.

The General Confederation of Labour (Portuguese: Confederação Geral do Trabalho, or CGT) was a former Portuguese labour union confederation. The General Confederation of Labour had its roots in the National Worker's Union and was founded in September 13 of 1919. It was greatly influenced by the anarcho-syndicalist movement. In 1924 it became officially recognized and joined the International Workers Association, at the time, it was composed of an estimated 150,000 members.

CC.OO. sees trade union autonomy as the exercise of democratic decision-making capacity, carried out independently of governments, employers, political parties and other social organisations. It undertakes its commitment to build a free, fair and equality-based society, based on the principle that trade unions are autonomous political entities. Our key objectives today are as follows: * To promote sustainable development * To construct a European framework for labour relations which would include collective bargaining and a framework legislation for social and labour relations. * To boost the political construction of a Europe based on rights, social and regional cohesion and the European Social Model. * To contribute, through international trade union action and collaboration with NGOs and social movements, to the globalisation of rights, particularly social and working rights, and to the democratic government of multilateral institutions, respecting international law and the aspirations for peace and justice of peoples. * To contribute to the strengthening of the ETUC and the ICFTU and the European and International Federations and promote trade union unity in the world. * To promote the affiliation of women and young people, fomenting their access to positions of responsibility at work and in the trade union. To affiliate and defend the rights of immigrant workers. * To reinforce and structure sector-based and company collective bargaining, broadening its content beyond salary and working hours. * Full and quality employment, overcoming the current precarious nature of jobs in the labour market. * To participate in handling changes which take place in labour relations and production, through social dialogue. * To maintain and improve the systems of social protection (pensions, unemployment, etc.) and key public services (health, education, etc). * To improve health and safety at work.

CISL, the second largest (4.287.551 members in 2005) Confederation of Trade Unions in Italy (19 major National branch (sector) Federations: e.g. metalworkers, chemical, textile workers, public employees, service, agricultural workers, etc., and 9 other, as we say, secondary Federations), affiliates salaried, white and blue collar employees, through its branch or sector Federations on the basis of non-denominational, non-partisan and non-ideological values and principles. CISL is locally structured, as a Confederation of the above mentioned branch unions, at territorial (district: such as, for instance, Milan, Rome, Palermo, Florence...) and regional levels (21 regions, in the country: such as Lombardy, Latium, Sicily, Tuscany...; and the Pensioners' Union members abroad). The task CISL sets for itself, and its main immediate goal, is that of defending both employed and unemployed workers' interests, in the conviction society's interests themselves are, thereby, better promoted. Several fundamental, shared values support such an approach: democracy, solidarity, pluralism and trade union independence from any economic power, employer, Government or political party. And the firm belief that employees, as builders of the wealth of their societies, are entitled to "participate", through collective bargaining and socio/political independent action by the trade unions of their own choice, to the construction of their own and their communities' future. That is why negotiation, on one side, and on the other what we call concertation (the building up of a co-decision system where, always through negotiation, the social partners as well as the countries' political actors engage themselves to pursue and further agreed goals and behave consequently to achieve an effective all-incomes policy) are the main instruments of our action. CISL does not give up conflict, of course, as a possible recourse. But we look at industrial action not as a value in itself but, really, as a last recourse.

The Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB) is Austria's unified, cross-party trade union organisation and has roughly 1.4 million members. GPA, Austria's Union of Salaried Private Sector Employees, with about 300 000 members, is the trade union with the most members within the ÖGB. In co-operation with the other unions within the ÖGB, GPA sees itself as a body that represents the interests of all salary earning employees, apprentices, retirees, pupils and students at a political, economic, social and cultural level. GPA is an intersectoral trade union that represents all salary earning employees working in the private sector in Austria. We represent employees working in the service sector as well as in the manufacturing industries, ranging from apprentices to managerial staff, from students to retirees. GPA represents many different economic sectors such as commerce, financial and economic services, social insurance and services, the manufacturing industries, research, education, culture, charitable societies and interest groups as well as the gambling, tourism and leisure industries. Through its matrix organisation that consists of geographical (regional offices) and professional divisions (economic sections) GPA aims at keeping in close contact with its members. GPA has separate divisions for youth and women that ensure a well-aimed representation of their particular interests. In addition to this, GPA has established special interest groups for people that work in similar fields of employment, such as professional and managerial staff, information and communication technology workers, field staff and flexible forms of employment. Works councils and young workers' councils elected in establishments throughout Austria are our most important partners and disseminators. It is our utmost aim to assist, support and co-operate with the works councils in their actions and campaigns. GPA keeps various bilateral and multilateral relations with private sector employee unions in many countries all across the world. Through our affiliation to UNI (Union Network International) and WFCW (World Federation of Clerical Workers) we also participate in international and European decision-making processes.

UNI europa is a European trade union federation. It unites trade unions organising in services and skills sectors in 50 different countries. With over 320 affiliated trade union organisations, UNI europa represents 7 million workers. European integration and globalisation means that trade unions can no longer be effective if they work solely at national or local level. In order to win better conditions for their members, unions representing workers in specific industries have to act together across Europe and internationally.

The General Union of Workers (UGT) is one of the most important trade unions in Spain. It is more than 100 years old because it was founded in 1888. It represents millions of workers from all sectors of production in the whole national territory. Apart from the wage-earning workers, UGT also includes the unemployed people, the freelance workers, the executives and the pensioners, among other ones. UGT is a big Union that has not stopped seeking for remarkable improvements within the framework of work and social welfare. It is its vocation to represent the biggest number of people (young people, women, new occupied, excluded, immigrants). It also the Union itself that offers a wide range of services to its members (legal protection, leisure activities, etc.). UGT's official web site, which you are visiting now, reflects the main worries and concerns of the Union, and offers, among other utilities, lots of information about the activities of the trade-union, as well as the latest produced documents, press releases and current events carried out by UGT (UGT en la prensa). It arranges almost 1.800 links of interest for workers and internet users in general. UGT is a founder member of the International Confederation of Free Trade Union (ICFTU) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). Its General Secretary, Cándido Méndez, is currently the President of ETUC within a four year mandate. We hope that this site will be of interest to you because we constantly try to improve it and keep it up to date. Do not hesitate to contact us when necessary. History: The UGT was founded August 12, 1888 by Pablo Iglesias Posse (b.Ferrol 1850- d.Madrid 1925), in relation with Marxist socialism, despite its statutory apolitical status. Until its XIV Congress of 1920, it did not consider class struggle as a basic principle of union action. Although the UGT could never establish formal unity with the PSOE, the union has been related to the PSOE since its founding, to the point that being a member of the UGT supposed an affiliation to the PSOE and vice versa. UGT sticker for solidarity with Latin AmericaIn the World War I era, the UGT followed a tactical line of close relationship and unity of action with Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT, National Labour Confederation) and the Communists. This era came to a sudden end with the advent of the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera, who gave a legal monopoly on labor organizing to his own government-sposored union. While the CNT opted for a radical confrontation with the regime, and were prohibited on this account, the UGT, although in disagreement with the dictatorship, adopted a collaborative attitude in order to continue to operate legally. The radicalization during the period of the Second Spanish Republic of the wing led by Francisco Largo Caballero, when the UGT surpassed a million members, and the bloody breakout of the Spanish Civil War deepened the internal fissures that resulted in the departure of Largo Caballero from the position of UGT secretary general in 1937. General Francisco Franco confined the UGT to exile and clandesitinity after his victory in the Spanish Civil War until his death in 1975. The Union emerged from secrecy during the democratic transition after Franco's death, as did the Communist Workers' Commissions (Comisiones Obreras, CCOO). UGT and CCOO, between them, constitute the major avenues for workers' representation in today's Spain, with the syndicalist Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) a distant third. Objectives: The UGT declares itself to be an institution of productive workers, organized along lines of trades and liberal professions, which respects freedom of thought, leading toward the transformation of the society, in order to establish it on the basis of social justice, equality and solidarity. HTF has recently merged with SIF to form UNIONEN. Below is a description of HTF The Salaried Employees' Union, generally known as HTF in Sweden, is a union for salaried personnel working in the private sector, primarily in commerce, transport and service industries. HTF has over 160,000 members. HTF´s primary role is to ensure the security and well-being of its members in the workplace. To this end HTF represents its members in negotiating collective agreements on pay and other conditions of employment, and sub-sequently monitors adherence to agreements and employ-ment legislation. We strive constantly to find new means of securing influence for our members, in order to improve their conditions of employment. We influence opinion, challenge injustices and work to prevent unnecessary bureaucracy – not least within our own organisation. We are not tied to any political party, but we see it as part of our role to lobby government on matters of policy, for the benefit of our members. And naturally we aim to maintain a suitably high profile and to make our opinions heard in public debate on labour market policies.
